Malaysia is quietly one of the best family destinations in South East Asia — English-speaking, safe, affordable and packed with wildlife encounters that define childhood memories.
Why Malaysia works for families
English is widely spoken, the food is varied and kid-friendly, and the infrastructure is excellent — good roads, clean hotels and reliable internal flights. Add genuine wildlife (orangutans, proboscis monkeys, turtles) and you've got a holiday that educates as much as it entertains.
Best places for kids
Borneo (Kota Kinabalu & Sabah)
The adventure option — and one of our favourites. The Sepilok orangutan sanctuary, Kinabatangan river cruises and island snorkelling make Borneo one of the world's great family wildlife trips. It's the centrepiece of our Borneo family package.
Langkawi
The easy beach option — calm waters, the cable car, mangrove tours and plenty of family resorts. Perfect for younger kids.
Kuala Lumpur
Two or three days of city fun — the Petronas Towers, the aquarium, the bird park and incredible food courts.
Pacing, food and safety
For families we keep it to two or three bases across two weeks, so the travel days never stack up. Food is a highlight — mild curries, noodles, roti and tropical fruit that even fussy eaters love. Safety is excellent throughout, with good medical care in KL and Kota Kinabalu.
