Thailand Family Holidays: Everything You Need to Know

Thailand is one of the easiest long-haul destinations for families on the planet. Thai people adore kids, the food is flexible, the hotels come with pools, and the wildlife — elephants, monkeys, tropical fish — keeps small humans wide-eyed for a fortnight. Here's what we tell every family before they book.

Why Thailand works so well for families

The culture runs on warmth. Don't be surprised if your toddler gets more attention than you do — children are treated like VIPs across the country. Infrastructure is solid: clean private transfers are affordable, hotels are generous with family rooms, and medical care in the main cities is excellent. That combination of gentle culture and reliable logistics is exactly what makes it a low-stress first trip to Asia.

Best places in Thailand for kids

Bangkok

It's loud and busy, but two or three days are magic. The river ferries are a ride in themselves, the Grand Palace is jaw-dropping, and the food courts at the malls are a brilliant, air-conditioned way to try everything. Kids love the tuk-tuks and the longtail canal rides.

Chiang Mai

The north is the family sweet spot — cooler, calmer, and packed with hands-on experiences. An ethical elephant sanctuary is usually the trip's highlight, and there are cooking classes, jungle zip-lines and sticky waterfalls within an hour's drive.

The islands

Phuket and Krabi offer shallow, warm water and boat trips with plenty of splash stops. Pick a resort with a good pool and kids' club and the beach days sort themselves.

Food, safety and practicalities

Thai food is endlessly customisable — order mild, or point at a dish and say "no chilli" and you'll be understood. Street food is generally safe; watch that it's cooked hot and busy with locals. For safety, the usual rules apply: bottled water, sun protection, and a bit of caution on scooters. Hospitals in Bangkok and Chiang Mai are genuinely world-class.

What to pack

  • Light, breathable clothes — it's hot and humid year-round.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen — the tropical sun is fierce.
  • A cover-up for temples — shoulders and knees covered.
  • Snacks & entertainment — long journeys go faster with backup supplies.

How many days do you need?

We'd allow a minimum of ten days and ideally twelve. It's a long flight, and the jet lag hits kids harder than adults. Two weeks lets you spread three bases — Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the beach — without a single overstuffed day, which is the difference between a holiday and an endurance test.

Our favourite family itinerary

Twelve nights is our ideal: three in Bangkok, four in Chiang Mai, and five by the beach. That's the exact shape of our Bangkok to Chiang Mai family package, which bundles the elephant sanctuary, a cooking class and all transfers into one price from £1,650 per person. Quick questions, answered

What's the best age for a Thailand family trip?

Any, honestly — Thailand is genuinely flexible. Toddlers love the pools and beaches, while older kids get the most from the elephant sanctuaries, cooking classes and boat days.

Is the street food safe for children?

At busy, freshly cooking stalls, yes. We suggest starting mild and easing in — and every market has noodle and rice dishes that even fussy eaters will eat.

How many nights do we need?

Twelve is our ideal for families, letting you split Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the beach without a single overstuffed day. Ten is the minimum we'd suggest for the distance involved.

Do the hotels cater for families?

Yes — most have family rooms, pools and many have kids' clubs. We hand-pick family-friendly properties for our family package.
