Malaysia's weather is a tale of two coasts — when the west is dry, the east is wet, and vice versa.

The short answer

For most travellers, the best time to visit Malaysia is November to March on the west coast — that's Langkawi, Penang and Kuala Lumpur in their driest, sunniest stretch. For Borneo (Sabah and Sarawak), the sweet spot is March to October. Because the coasts run on opposite schedules, there's genuinely a good time to visit Malaysia in almost any month.

West coast (Langkawi, Penang, KL)

The west coast's dry season runs November to March, with the wettest stretch from April to October. Langkawi is at its postcard best in these months — calm seas, clear skies and reliable sunsets, which is exactly why our Langkawi & KL package is timed for it.

East coast (Perhentians, Tioman, Redang)

The east coast flips it: dry and beautiful from April to October, then effectively closing for the monsoon from November to February, when many resorts shut entirely. If you're dreaming of the Perhentians' beaches, plan around their season.

Borneo (Kota Kinabalu, Kuching)

Borneo is wettest from November to February and driest from March to October — which is the window for wildlife river cruises and clear trekking in Sabah. Our Borneo family adventure runs in this window.

Which month for you?

  • Beach & island lovers (west) — November to March.
  • Borneo & wildlife — March to October.
  • East coast islands — April to October.
  • City & culture — year-round, but driest November to March.

Quick questions, answered

Can I visit Malaysia in the summer holidays?

Yes — the east coast islands and Borneo are at their best from April to October, which lines up perfectly with school holidays. The west coast is wetter then, so you just pick the right coast.

Is there a month to avoid?

Not really — because the coasts run opposite, there's always somewhere good. Just match your destination to the season, and we'll help you do that.

How far ahead should I book?

Six months for the peak November-to-March west coast and the Borneo dry season. Call 020 7946 0958 and we'll match your dates to the right coast.
