Northern vs Southern Vietnam: Which Should You Visit?

If time is short, you might only see one half of Vietnam — and the two halves are genuinely different countries in feel. The north is misty, traditional and mountain-cool; the south is sunny, fast and river-laced. Here's how to choose.

Vietnam travel — Northern vs Southern Vietnam: Which Should You Visit?

If time is short, you might only see one half of Vietnam — and the two halves are genuinely different countries in feel.

The quick take

Choose the north for drama — Ha Long Bay, Sapa's terraces and the cultural weight of Hanoi. Choose the south for warmth, river life and the buzz of Ho Chi Minh City. If you've got two weeks, do both — they're connected by a 2-hour flight, and the contrast is half the fun.

Hanoi vs Ho Chi Minh City

Hanoi is the older soul — tree-lined boulevards, lakes, temples and an Old Quarter that hasn't changed much in a century. Ho Chi Minh City (still "Saigon" to locals) is the engine — skyscrapers, rooftop bars, and traffic that moves like water. If you want atmosphere, Hanoi. If you want energy, Saigon.

Scenery

The north wins on spectacle: Ha Long Bay's karsts, Sapa's rice terraces, Ninh Binh's rivers. The south offers the Mekong Delta's canals and the beaches of Phu Quoc and Mui Ne. For first-timers, the north's landscapes are the stronger draw.

Food

Northern food is cleaner and more restrained — pho, bun cha, grilled fish. Southern food is sweeter and bolder — banh xeo, com tam, tropical fruit everywhere. Both are superb; the north gets the edge for iconic dishes, the south for variety.

Weather

The north has seasons (cool and dry November–April); the south is warm year-round with a wet season May–November. If you're travelling in the northern winter, both are in their prime simultaneously.

The verdict

First time and short on days? The north and centre — Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hoi An — is the classic, and the route of our Hanoi to Hoi An package. Two weeks or more? Add the south, which is exactly what our family explorer does.

Quick questions, answered

Can I visit both in one trip?

Yes — a 2-hour flight connects Hanoi and Saigon, and a two-week trip does both comfortably. It's the best way to see how different the two halves really are.

Which is better for first-timers?

The north and centre — the scenery and culture are the classic Vietnam, and it's the smoother introduction. The south adds energy once you know the rhythm.

Which is cheaper?

Broadly similar, with the south slightly cheaper on food and hotels. Still deciding? Call 020 7946 0958 and we'll talk you through it.
