Thailand vs Vietnam: Which Should You Visit?

It's the question we hear most, and it's a fair one: Thailand and Vietnam sit side by side on the map and both promise temples, beaches and remarkable food. But they deliver very different trips. Here's our honest comparison, from people who send travellers to both every week.

It's the question we hear most, and it's a fair one: Thailand and Vietnam sit side by side on the map and both promise temples, beaches and remarkable food.

The quick take

Choose Thailand if you want the easier, more polished trip — better beach resorts, smoother logistics and a gentler introduction to Asia. Choose Vietnam if you want raw energy, the best-value food in the region and a more adventurous, story-rich journey. Both are brilliant; they just scratch different itches.

Beaches and islands

Thailand wins this round comfortably. Phuket, Krabi and Phi Phi set the global standard for island beauty, and the resort infrastructure — beachfront pools, sunset bars, island-hopping boats — is second to none. Vietnam's beaches (Da Nang, Phu Quoc) are lovely but can't match the drama of the Andaman coast. If the beach is the point of the trip, pick Thailand.

Food

This is close, and it comes down to taste. Thai food is bolder and more coconut-creamy; Vietnamese food is lighter, fresher and herb-driven — think pho, banh mi and fresh spring rolls. On value, Vietnam wins: you'll eat exceptionally well for pennies. On sheer variety, Thailand edges it. Honestly, you can't lose here.

Ease and first-timer friendliness

Thailand is the smoother first trip. English is widely spoken, transport is easy, and the whole country is geared to tourism. Vietnam rewards a little more independence — you'll navigate motorbike traffic in Hanoi and more DIY logistics between cities, unless you let a package handle it. If you're travelling with kids or grandparents, Thailand's infrastructure is a genuine advantage.

Cost

Vietnam is the cheaper country on the ground — food, hotels and tours all undercut Thailand by a noticeable margin. Thailand's flights and resorts can be pricier, but you get more polish. Our Vietnam Heritage Trail starts at £1,745pp and our Phuket & Krabi honeymoon from £1,895 — so the gap narrows once flights and nice hotels are involved.

For families

Both work well, but differently. Thailand's islands and elephant sanctuaries are an easier win for younger kids. Vietnam is brilliant for slightly older children who'll remember the caves, lanterns and boat rides — and it's cheaper. If ease is your priority, Thailand; if you want a bit more adventure for the same money, Vietnam.
